The End of ALES204 but the Beginning of New Opportunities

After writing my blog post about blogging yesterday I spent a lot of time reading other ALES204 students' blogs and thinking about what I learned this year. These students helped to give me a more positive view on blogging for this class. In particular, while reading Laura Adam's reflective blog post, I realized that I hadn't totally grasped the concept of blogging for this class. Although it may have seemed redundant to write about the same things as everyone else in the class, everyone was able to let their own personalities shine through each blog post and each student was able to connect to their classmates in a unique way. Thank you Laura for enlightening me!

On that note, we had our last lecture this morning. The CSL students presented Pecha Kucha presentations about their placements. It was really great to see students applying their newly acquired public speaking and presentation knowledge and to hear about their CSL experiences. My favourite part of the class however had to be when Kelsey MacDonald, Annalise Young and I shared our class summary video that we had produced. What an honour it was to end the entire semester with our creation. A special thank you to our professor Jessica Laccetti for giving us that opportunity. We had a great time and it was a perfect way to review all the new tools we learned about throughout the semester. And of course, we got to use our favourite video site - YouTube!

And, here's a screen shot from our video of me having troubles with notebooks and papers. One huge benefit of all the tools we learned about in ALES204 was that they didn't require paper! Not only is it much easier just to carry a laptop, smart phone and/or tablet but it's also more sustainable than printing thousands of papers per year. 

This class might be over, but I believe that students will be able to continue applying their newly acquired knowledge well into their future endeavours. I know I will. During the Christmas break, I plan to revamp my Facebook page and my LinkedIn, two of my favourite new tools to help me in my future career. I also plan on using Google Docs more often. It's such a great way to work with people on projects without the inconvenience of sending each other a million emails. I'm very thankful to have been shown and taught how to use all these tools and more. Us Fall 2011 ALES204 students were extremely lucky to have had this privilege.

Try blogging!

My favourite fashion blogger, Andy Tores of Style Scrapbook presented a TED talk last week about how to create a successful blog. I wanted to share it with you (especially ALES204 students) because she is the perfect example of someone who succeeded in achieving many of her dreams after starting her blog. One truly important thing to consider when blogging is to be yourself and be genuine. That's when people begin to relate to you and they want to come back to read what you have to say and see the photos you've been taking.

In ALES204 we were asked to blog about our thoughts on the class and to blog about some of the projects we worked on for the class. I think that some students may have been discouraged by this daunting task. Even for me who had been blogging for over a year before the class began, it was really difficult to keep updating my blog. Discussing topics that every other student was also blogging about and that we had already discussed thoroughly in class just did not serve much purpose for me. In spite of this, I did learn a few things through this blogging project. One of the most obvious is that I have to love what I'm blogging about to write genuinely and update frequently.

I hope that students will see the potential fun and rewards that come of blogging and try their own after this class. Students in any area of study in the ALES department can start up a blog pertaining to their passions. Like Andy Tores, you will start small. You might not have the highest quality photos or the most interesting discussions but the more you work on it the better it will get. And the better you get, the more people will come visit your site and that's when you'll start receiving interesting comments and you might even get some opportunities that you'd never dreamed of having. I can say this with assurance as even with my small fashion and lifestyle blog, I have received invites to cover fashion events in Edmonton.

Editing Wikipedia Article Stubs

Our latest assignment in ALES204 was editing an article stub on Wikipedia. Although we had a huge list of article stubs to choose from, I had a hard time choosing a good article related to clothing, textiles or fashion. The article stubs that were related to these tended to simply need a definition. Try finding enough information about seam gages to write 300-600 words - it would not be easy. In the end, I decided to choose the article stub for a fashion label called Kookaï. After doing some quick research on the label to see if I could collect enough information to write a few paragraphs about it, I decided it would be an interesting topic to write about.

When I wrote the article, I titled each paragraph to make it easier for readers to find the information they want and faster. It was very simple to add headings to the article. What was difficult about completing this assignment was properly referencing my work. I had information from a number of sites but much of the information came from the same site. I could not understand how to correctly add certain references more than once into my article. I wanted to do as the previous contributor of this article stub did with reference one, including "a" and "b" but was not able to. Does anybody know how to do this?  Here's what my edits looks like:

Vlog about ALES 204

Look outside for a moment and notice the multiplication of skeleton-like trees that sway softly in the autumn breeze. The end of October is upon us and so are all our final University projects and exams. Luckily for me, I have a week off from my ALES 204 class to work on my E-portfolio. 

While I scroll through our class blog, post after post, I realize how fortunate I am to have taken the ALES 204 class this semester. Otherwise, I would have never learned how to properly use social media such as Facebook and Twitter, efficiently and in a professional manner. 

As I have been using Twitter more frequently than in the past; to tweet about the class and complete assignments, I thought it would be helpful to link the five professionals I follow on Twitter and why in this blog post. That way, you won't have to go through all my tweets to find out.

Facebook Pages: The New Resumé

When in your last year of University it's normal to start sweating a little when you think that in one year you will no longer be safely sitting in a classroom listening listlessly to your teacher as you sip your coffee. In one year, you are expected to have a job and be living on your own. Essentially, you will be all grown up. Should this be such a daunting prospect? 

Fear not students, social media to the rescue! Our task this week in ALES 204, was to create a business profile on Facebook. Initially, this was rather worrisome as anybody would be able to visit this page if they were so inclined. Worries aside, I tackled the task seriously. I thought to myself, I am in my last year at the University after all, why not show people what I am all about now. Considering that I eventually want to work for a magazine, social media is the perfect way to get people's attention in that industry. If this ALES class is teaching me anything, it's certainly showing me a way to use social media in an academic and professional manner. Social media will allow me to demonstrate to potential employers that I am a serious, passionate and hard working student that would be a great asset for their company.

While reading a few blogs created by other students in my ALES 204 class, I noticed there was one common theme: most students would be embarrassed by the content on their regular Facebook profiles if an employer were to see it. Maureen for example wrote that she has a lot of unprofessional photos of drunken evenings with friends on her profile. While her business profile might be able to save her from losing a job, nothing stops people from knowing friends of friends of friends of… you get the point. I think that no matter what, if people chose to have an online presence, they should try to avoid having any compromising photos of themselves on any website, even "private" Facebook profiles.

C'est qui? C'est moi!

Hi everyone, my name is Julianna Damer and here's what I look like. I'm currently in my 4th year at the University of Alberta and am studying Human Ecology. My major is in Textiles & Clothing and my minor is in Design & Product Development.

My minor might be in Design but my real passion lies in communications. I've had a Tumblr blog for over a year now and it has allowed me to meet so many other great Edmontonians who are passionate about making Edmonton a more fashionable place. (Some of them even have my blog linked on theirs!) Check out my blog here. I've shared photos of fashion events, personal travels, photo shoots, school projects and much more. I am certain that my blog will serve me when applying for jobs in the future as it is basically a portfolio.

Communication plays a huge role in the fashion world. I wouldn't be able to count with my fingers and toes the number of articles out there, these days, that state that the most influential people at fashion shows and simply in the fashion world at large are actually bloggers. Sorry Anna Wintour… But seriously, social media gives you the opportunity to create a network of followers and hopefully can help you to catch the eye of industry big wigs. To give an example, as I was looking through tweets one day I noticed a Flare Magazine Tweet informing people that they now had a Tumblr account and that they wanted people to send their Tumblr blog links to them. Was this going to be my claim to fame? Not quite, but I replied to their tweet with my blog URL and next thing you know, I was getting a reply from them thanking me for my link and letting me know that they loved the street style photos I had shot while in Paris. How cool is that?! That just goes to show how easy it is to communicate with people that you would never have dreamt of talking to before social media ever existed.

I'm very thankful for this class. I may know quite a lot about social media but I think that there's always something new to learn from others and I can't wait to further my knowledge and become an even better blogger and Tweet-er!

I can't wait to share my journey with you this semester, be it with ALES 204 or other classes. In fact, here's a photo of me in my first HECOL 354 course (Apparel Design and Product Development I) this week. You can see me drafting a pattern for a skirt! My friend Brittany Gora took the photo.
